MATTHEW ARNOLD (1822—1888)

Son of the noted educator Dr. Thomas Arnold, Matthew Arnold was educated at Rugby School (where his father was Headmaster) and Oxford. In 1851 he was appointed Inspector of Schools, a position he held for 35 years. In 1857 he was elected to the Oxford chair of poetry. Arnold is equally important for his poetry and his prose. His essays widened the scope of criticism far beyond its previous role in England, and also treated topics in education, culture and religion. His poetry, like the enormously popular “Dover Beach,” addresses many of the concerns of the mid-Victorian period with clarity of thought and brilliant technique.
